International Power's chairman Sir Neville Simms has begun rebuilding the stake he sold in the power station operator before the changes in the capital gains tax regime that were introduced in April.

He bought 75,000 shares for 415p each, his sole holding in the company.

Back in March, he sold 178,220 shares in the company at 409.4p a share "in light of the 80% increase in the rate of Capital Gains Tax following the ending of the current UK taper relief rules on 6 April 2008," the company said at at the time.

It added: "It is the chairman's current intention to rebuild his shareholding in the company in the near future."

The new capital gains tax regime means that investors pay a flat rate of 18% on profits from the sale of shares instead of previous rates as low as 10%.
