Irish Life & Permanent confirms talks with EBS

Irish Life & Permanent confirmed it is in "discussions" with EBS Building Society after press speculation suggested the two groups are in takeover talks.

"In response to recent comment in the media, Irish Life & Permanent confirms that it has been in discussions with the EBS Building Society about how the two institutions might work together in the current market environment," said the group, after the Irish Independent revealed the talks between the two groups.

The news follows confirmation from Bank of Ireland that it received a number of unsolicited approaches that could lead to investment in the bank.

Earlier, the Irish Times reported that a US consortium is looking to buy a 40% stake in Bank of Ireland and merge it with Irish Life & Permanent
