Smart Telecom directors underline faith

19 June 2006 14:44:00

Irish telephone operator Smart Telecom has had a pretty difficult year, though the last few months have really tested its directors' mettle.

Shares in the group slumped after it revealed in February that Ireland's regulator had revoked its 3G licence to provide high-speed wireless telephone services. Since the announcement, shares in Smart have nearly halved.

Last week's statement from the company that it was delaying its expected breakeven date by around six months to the middle of next year simply served to increase the pressure on the management.

Demonstrating their faith however, Commercial Director Paul Sullivan and IT Director Maria Pearl Roche each snapped up 1m shares in the group at a price of 16p per share.

The transactions cost the directors £160,000 a piece and leaves Sullivan with a stake of some 6.6m shares and Roche with a holding of some 3.6m.

Last week Smart Telecom said it was continuing to pursue legal measures to regain its 3G mobile licence and said it remains confident of benefiting from broadband take-up.

There is an extra risk of losing money when shares are bought in some smaller companies including 'Penny Shares'. There is a big difference between the buying price and the selling price of these shares. If they have to be sold immediately, you may get back much less than you paid for them or you may have difficulty in selling them. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results. The price may change quickly and it may go down as well as up. You could lose every penny put into a particular share.
