TechMARK movers: Oxford Biomedica shares slump

11 July 2008 13:39:00

Shares in Oxford Biomedica plummeted after the gene therapy group said the Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) has advised it that a final stage clinical trial of its renal cancer treatment TroVax would not meet its defined goals.

The DSMB recommendation is to continue the study but discontinue further vaccinations, the group said.

"This news is clearly disappointing. However, there is good reason to continue the study and potentially a late survival benefit for TroVax may still be demonstrated," said chief executive Mike McDonald.

Encryption software specialist nCipher advanced on news that it has agreed to a £50.7m bid from defence firm Thales.

Thales will offer 300p per share, which is a 138% premium to the closing price of nCipher on 10 April, the last business day prior to the group admitting that it had received an approach.

Thales said the acquisition is in line with its strategy of expanding its presence in the sector of information and communication systems security.
