Penny Share Review 197

Monday 18 August 2003

City veteran, Jim Slater, is profiled in Saturday's Daily Mail. He comments on house builders, gold and BioProjects International (BIP), in which he holds the post of Chairman. He confesses that he didn't realise how difficult biotech can be as a business and talks about the Group's key investments, including a 48% stake in ViaLogy. A "promising endorsement" of ViaLogy's technology is the recent appointment of Klaus Tschira, who is described as Germany's equivalent of Bill Gates. The article concludes by saying, "keep on eye on the man who has always been quick to spot a trend". The shares nudged higher by 0.5p to 4.12p on Monday morning.

The Shares in the Boardroom' section of the Sunday Times , reports on recent director buying at Electric Word (ELE), by Chairman Nigel Wray, who has spent £99,001 over the last month buying shares in the Company. He now holds a stake of 14.4%. The stock was quoted at 10.12p on Monday, representing a 20% rise from Friday.

The Sunday Express advises readers to 'Buy' NMT Group (NMT) at 2.12p, following the recent results announcement and large orders from Roche. The paper says that no other syringe suppliers have emerged to challenge NMT's contracts with Roche. Shares in the Company traded 0.42p higher on Monday at 2.55p.

The Daily Telegraph on Saturday briefly recaps on Northern Petroleum's (NOP) announcement of a 5% stake being taken in Sterling Resource's interest in mining and exploring rights in areas next to the Avington oil well in Hampshire. Northern Petroleum shares dropped 0.12p to 4.88p on Monday morning.

Top Ten Holdings (TTH) receives a small mention in the Market Report section of Saturday's Daily Mail. The paper comments that the shares rose by 2.25p to 10.25p on Friday, as investors realised it is profitable and cash generative and plans to pay a maiden dividend this year. However, the paper did not mention that the Investors Chronicle tipped the stock as a 'Buy' on the same day, which probably played a large part in Friday's rise. On Monday morning, the shares continued to move higher, trading at 12.25p, a rise of 2p on Friday's closing price.

NB: Monday morning prices were taken at the time of going to press of 10.37am.
