Penny Share Review 226

Monday 15 March 2004

The Guardian on Saturday wrote that it looks 'pretty gloomy' for the shareholders in Beaufort International (BFG), whose shares were suspended pending clarification of its financial position. The newspaper hopes this won't affect its £1.2m contract for the FSA. The shares are suspended at 0.09p.

Saturday's Daily Express picked up on rumours surrounding Motion Media (MMD.L) that a multi million pound order would be announced soon and that an acquisition could be on the cards. At 12:01 the shares were up 0.25p to 13.25p from Friday's close.

Daily Express on Saturday recapped on the two publishing deals Warthog (WHOG) signed for its Future Tactics game. Daily Mail on Saturday named the publisher as Crave Entertainment Inc. At 12:03, the share price was unchanged from Friday's closing price at 2.25p.

Daily Mail and Daily Express on Saturday said that Mean Fiddler (MEF.L) would be handling this year's European tour by American superstar Usher. At 12:03 the shares were down 1p to 50p from Friday's close.

Griffin Mining (GFF.L) was rated as a 'Speculative Buy' in the Sunday Times' 'Sharewatch' column, which mentioned of whispers from South Africa that Anglo American might have its beady eye on the Group. At 12:20 the share price was unchanged from Friday's closing price at 5.5p.

The Business (14/15 March 2004) featured Datacash (DATA) in its 'AIM Investor' section and pointed to the fact that although the share price has trebled since the bottom of the market about a year ago, the barriers to entry are high in the online card processing industry and that the Company might be an acquisition target in the long run, when the payment card processing ultimately becomes a commodity product. The shares were up 2.5% to 71p from Friday's close at 12:04.

The Sunday Telegraph featured the ousting of PlaneStation's (PTG) CEO. Columnist Edmond Jackson said that the shareholders were concerned because they were not given any reasons for the ousting and this happened amid reports that Robert Ware was preparing to make a bid. Mr Jackson wrote that he fears the long-term potential of the recovery-to-growth play will be trashed and he does not have confidence in the 'supposed' search for a new CEO. Moreover, he said that this situation could aid the bidder, who seems to be on course to make a deal with the institutional shareholders and if success is eventually realised outside the stock market, it would be 'sickening'. At 12:04 the shares were down by 0.05p to 5p from Friday's close.

Ofex (OFX.L) was featured in today's FT, which pointed out that despite 7 initial Public Offerings (IPO) this year on AIM, Ofex has yet to report its first IPO. However the newspaper also said that Ofex was confident that this year it would be able to recruit more than 50 companies, especially after the move towards a quote driven trading system starts taking effect. Nevertheless, the article points out that Ofex will have a tough job persuading companies to stay in this market. At 12:05 the shares had moved down by 0.50p to 27.5p from Friday's close.

The Daily Telegraph on Saturday recapped on the interim results of Fairplace consulting (FCO.L), which posted a pre-tax loss of £365,476. At 12:06 the share price was unchanged from Friday's closing price at 86.5p.

Matrix Communications (MXC.L) was featured in the 'Stockwatch' section in the Times on Saturday, as being a totally different business than Offshore Telecom. At 12:06 the shares had moved down by 0.19p to 3.1p from Friday's close.

The Times on Saturday recapped on the second large share sale in Cardpoint (CASH) by founder Nigel Mills who undertook not to sell any further stock until after November's full-year results. At 12:07 the shares had moved ahead by 1.5p to 131.5p from Friday's close.

According to the Times, Toad Group (TOA.L) is expected to report a doubling of underlying pre-tax profits to £1.2m when it reports full-year figures on Friday. At 12:07 the shares had moved ahead by 0.5p to 22.75p from Friday's close.

According to the Independent, CybIT (CYH) is plotting an audacious merger approach to Minorplanet in a deal that would allow it to push its own products and services to Minorplanet's customer base. Although Minorplanet insists the fundraising details will be finalised by the end of the month, bankers expect CybIT to make a hostile approach before anything is signed. At 12:00 the shares had moved ahead by 0.08p to 2.65p from Friday's close.

Risk Warning

There is an extra risk of losing money when shares are bought in some smaller companies including 'Penny Shares'. There is a big difference between the buying price and the selling price of these shares. If they have to be sold immediately, you may get back much less than you paid for them or you may have difficulty in selling them. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results. The price may change quickly and it may go down as well as up. You could lose every penny put into a particular share.
