Penny Share Review 268

10 January 2005

Press

Saturday’s Daily Express mentioned a 2p gain on Friday for Gladstone (GLD), on the back of word that trading has been ‘robust’ and that public and private sector order books look encouraging. After these gains, the shares marked time at 24.25p in early trade today.

Monday’s edition of The Independent seemed a bit frustrated with Matrix Communications (MXC.L), particularly the Group’s reticence regarding the value of a contract won with “a mobile phone giant, believed to be Vodafone”. Matrix released its results today and the details still weren’t itemised, but discretion is a valuable watchword. Having digested the results, the market may be witnessing some profits being locked-in and the stock was down 1.5p at 224.5p.

Speculation regarding a potential tie-up with Easynet prompted a rise in the share price of Pipex Communications (PXC.L) last week, noted Saturday’s Daily Telegraph. Approximately 16.7m Pipex shares changed hands during the course of Friday and the market was lively again today, with the shares up 0.13p to 8.5p.

Belief that a maiden dividend is due from SectorGuard (SGD) drew the attention of The Independent on Monday. The Company has grown organically and by acquisition, aiming to consolidate a fragmented market, with recent moves into the West Midlands. A dividend would demonstrate the strength of cash flow and all will be revealed in tomorrow’s results. In anticipation of the announcement, the equity pushed up another 0.13p to 4.25p as it continued its recovery.

Monday’s prices, quoted above, were taken at 09:37 on 10 January 2005.
